Personal Finance

Personal Finance

97 per cent of adults have a current account. We work with members to serve customers better and foster competition and innovation.

Technological and regulatory change has reshaped the personal finance market significantly over the past ten years, with new market entrants broadening the ways that customers can choose to do their banking. But it is important to ensure that customers who prefer more traditional ways to manage their money aren’t left behind, so our personal finance policy agenda seeks to be both inclusive and supportive of all customers, including those in vulnerable circumstances, to ensure they get the help they need.

Within UK Finance we draw on expertise from across the business to inform our thinking, especially on cross-cutting issues that affect customers in a variety of different circumstances, such as the publication of service quality metrics or supporting members’ approach to complaints handling, where PPI continues to feature. Our Consumer Advisory Group, comprising consumer advocates from a number of institutions, helps to inform and shape the approach to our work.

To complement our policy activity, we carry out extensive campaigning and communications work to raise the profile of important customer-facing initiatives such as the use of Post Office counters for everyday banking, implementation of the Immigration Act, the Death Notification Service and the Financial Abuse Code of Practice. Over the past 18 months we have supported: delivery of a range of revised basic bank accounts; implementation of the Access to Banking Standard; and the implementation of key legislation such as the Immigration Act and the Payments Account Directive.

UK Finance and the largest retail banks and building societies have made five commitments to continue to preserve access to cash for consumers and businesses over the long term to provide certainty that cash access will be available for individuals and businesses to both withdraw and deposit cash, now and in the future.
