Crypto has burst into the scene as a distinct and wholly new asset class. Its short history has not been without controversy, which to a certain extent justifies the apprehension of financial institutions historically to engage with it, but with more than a hundred million users, a market cap close to 1USD trillion in June 2022, and a vibrant ecosystem that spreads well beyond issuers of tokens and currencies, it has reached a point where it is impossible to dismiss.

Financial institutions (FIs) are already exposed to the sector directly or indirectly through their client base, however the understanding of the risks and controls required to mitigate them, is typically low in traditional financial institutions.

FIs that understand the risks and the potential of this new asset class to disrupt existing business models and propositions, will be best positioned to exploit the opportunities that crypto presents.

This webinar will look at the current state of crypto adoption, and the exposure to crypto faced by banks, both directly and indirectly. It will also frame the key considerations and controls that banks and other FIs must consider and implement to mitigate risks and comply with obligations as they move into the crypto space or increase exposure to it. Finally, we will finish with a look at best practices in crypto compliance and what might be next in terms of regulation

Manuel has a deep knowledge of the cryptoassets industry, acquired through more than six years of studying, investment and advisory work. In the current phase of his career, he has used this knowledge to train companies in the traditional finance sector about the significance of this nascent industry, its actors and quickly developing regulatory framework, as well as advising crypto firms on their regulatory obligations as they seek registrations, and playing an active role in shaping discussions on regulation through industry associations.
