Cyber Essentials is a Government backed framework which introduces cyber security controls proven to be effective against the most common internet based cyber threats such as phishing, malware, ransomware, password guessing and network attacks.

This workshop provides delegates with the opportunity to fully understand the value of the scheme's five core controls - firewalls, secure configuration, user access control, malware protection, and patch management - and delivers an overview of how to implement them.

Through this course we will show you, in non-technical terms, how the security measures of Cyber Essentials can be applied most effectively and economically; and sometimes for free.

By the end of the course you will be able to either apply the measures yourself or understand the right questions to ask the professionals to ensure you get the right level of service.

Agenda:

The workshop will provide delegates with:

  • an overview of the Cyber Essentials scheme including an outline of why the UK government actively encourages certification to this scheme
  • a layman's explanation of the five core technical controls which make up Cyber Essentials.  The course will look at each of the controls individually, describe clearly what each one means and explain how each of the basic controls contributes to enhanced cyber security
  • an outline of the key benefits that can be achieved through implementing the Cyber Essentials controls.  Aside from proven resilience against cyber threats, the scheme also has a valuable role to play in complying with Data Protection legislation
  • an outline of where delegates can find further authoritative advice and guidance for a wide range of cyber security best practice

Learning outcomes:

By the end of this workshop you will:

  • have an understanding on how and why the controls and good practice within Cyber Essentials can enhance the security of your organisation,
  • have an understanding on how and why the controls within Cyber Essentials are being mandated across an increasing number of contracts,
  • have an understanding of the wider benefits of Cyber Essentials including how it effectively contributes to Data Protection legislation requirements,
  • know where to turn to for authoritative advice and guidance for measures that extend beyond Cyber Essentials.

This workshop is delivered directly by the IASME Consortium who, on 1st April 2020, were appointed by the National Cyber Security Centre as their Cyber Essentials Partner. Cyber Essentials is jointly owned by the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and by the National Cyber Security Centre
