Cancer Research UK are the only cancer charity in the UK that tackles all different types of cancer, over 200 hundred of them. We receive no government funding. We are however, making major advances, In the 1970s, only 1 in 2 people survived cancer for more than 10 years, through life saving research those statistics have risen to 2 in 4 people, but we want to accelerate that to 3 in 4 by the year 2034. Our ambition to do this will be achieved through these key areas - early diagnosis, developing new treatments and optimising current treatments by personalising them and making them even more effective.
Last year in Scotland alone CRUK spent over £34 million on research. It is vital that we continue to fund this research - every day in Scotland 88 people are diagnosed with cancer, it is Scotland's biggest killer with 44 people dying each day from this disease.
This is why the support from BBCD events are vital. The event began 4years ago when a few business ladies came together and felt the need for companies/organizations to really get behind and support Cancer Research UK. The Board grew organically over the first year. Each member had real commitment to drive it forward and brought something different to the team, depending on their area of expertise. Everyone contributed with ideas, suggestions and utilising their networks. Glasgow BBCD has become the flagship for this CRUK event - we are now seeing other dinners rolling out throughout the UK. Working towards Glasgow's 5th event on the 27th February 2020 means that we are striving to do the best that we can, we would love to make this a year to remember and continue the fantastic work that has raised over £275,000 to date for life-saving research.
