This first session from Atlas Analytics looks at government-grade Structured Analytic Techniques (SATs), focusing on Analysis of Competing Hypotheses (ACH).

You will learn how to use the technique and then make operational recommendations based on your findings.

ACH involves the identification of a complete set of alternative explanations to a situation (presented as hypotheses), the systematic evaluation of each, and the selection of the hypothesis or hypotheses that fit best.

This technique is a valuable way to determine the likeliest scenario on the basis of available evidence, providing a robust basis for operational decisions, and an audit trail showing how evidence-based decision making has been used.

By the end of this workshop you will be able to:

  • Explain the definition of Structured Analytic Techniques (SATs) and how they shape operational work
  • Understand how to use the ACH technique
  • Understand how the technique is currently used by FinCrime teams in banks
  • Apply the technique to a FinCrime scenario
  • Use outputs from the technique to recommend operational decisions
