Practical Understanding for Real-World Application

Derivatives are widely used across financial services but often understood in parts.

Whether you work in risk, treasury, operations, compliance, or front office, you’re likely interacting with derivatives in your role. But understanding how they connect across markets, pricing and risk is what builds real confidence.

This full-day, expert-led session gives you a clear and practical view of how derivatives work in real markets. It focuses on how futures, forwards, swaps, and options are used in practice, not just how they are defined.

Why Attend?

This is a hands-on session designed to help you move beyond process and build a more complete understanding of derivatives.

We go beyond basic definitions to focus on:

  • Connecting the products: Understand how futures, forwards, swaps and options relate to each other across markets
  • Understanding risk and pricing: See how interest rates, market movements and liquidity shape derivatives in practice
  • Real-world application: Learn how derivatives are used to hedge FX, interest rate and commodity exposures
  • Market infrastructure: Understand clearing, margining and the role of central counterparties (CCPs)
  • Confidence in conversations: Build the knowledge to engage across teams and challenge assumptions.

Inside the Agenda

The session brings together the key elements of derivatives into three clear areas, helping you understand how they connect in practice.

Futures and forwards

  • Understand how forwards and futures differ, when each is used, and how they are priced.
  • Explore the infrastructure that supports these markets, including clearing, margining and counterparty risk, as well as how these instruments are used to manage FX and other exposures.

Interest rate swaps and hedging

  • Learn how swaps are structured and priced, and how fixed and floating legs interact.
  • Explore how swaps are used to manage interest rate risk, alongside practical elements such as execution, collateral, netting, and the lifecycle of trades.

Options

  • Build a clear understanding of options, including rights and obligations, different styles and how value is determined.
  • You will learn concepts such as “moneyness”, as well as how options are used across asset classes and traded in different market environments.
