Around 5000 people in the UK are diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease each year.

MND is a rapidly progressing neurological condition that affects the brain and spinal cord, causing the nerves that control movement to wither and die. As symptoms progress, MND can leave people locked inside a failing body, alert and aware, but unable to move, talk, swallow, or even breathe.

MND is a terminal condition, and most people survive, on average, between 18 months to three years from diagnosis. Every day in the UK, six people are diagnosed with MND. Another six people die. There are currently no effective treatments and no cure. Although relatively rare, the effect that this disease also has on family and friends is absolutely devastating. It is brutal and pitiless and relentless.

The MND Association puts people with MND at the heart of everything we do. It’s a one stop shop – providing care and support, campaigning, and research. Much of this is provided by our network of over 10,000 volunteers.

Last year, we supported over 2000 families with support grants. We can often do what the NHS can’t – driving lessons for carers to get to medical appointments, comfortable riser-recliner chairs, Sky Sports packages for people who can no longer get to a match, counselling for young people who have lost a parent, voice banking, amazing AI technology to enable people who can no longer speak, continue to express themselves with their own voice.

Every pound raised and raised from the heart, pays for another step on the road to our goal: a world free from MND.
