Workshop overview:

This workshop explores quantitative framework tools, namely, risk events (or losses) and scenario analysis. It focuses on their practical application and advocates for moving away from solely risk measurement and capital calculation to active risk management. Event (loss) data collection is the most common operational risk component, and the emphasis of the training is on the practical yet challenging aspects, examining how to calibrate the thresholds correctly, consider the human element of reporting, and ensure data completeness and accuracy.

The workshop addresses the evolution of the tool in the rise of technology incidents, regulatory non-compliance and data breaches. It also provides a step-by-step guide to developing scenarios and reviews the process in the context of emerging risks. It then proceeds to an insightful discussion of emerging risks financial services firms should have on their radar.

The workshop is structured to provide the delegates with crucial knowledge as well as ample opportunities for group work and discussion, to address emerging themes and benchmark solutions with peer firms. It is packed with practical tips and hints and ends with ‘make a difference’ discussion, where attendees share takeaways that will make a real difference to their organisation. The training is based on a best-selling book, Operational Risk Management of Financial Services: A practical guide to establishing effective solutions, which serves as a base for the workshop materials and enables continuous learning.

Learning outcomes:

  • Examine the evolution of operational risk events
  • Structure a value-added risk event reporting and analysis
  • Find solutions to challenges around data completeness and accuracy
  • Learn how to effectively use scenario analysis for risk management and measurement
  • Discuss the best practices in emerging risk process set-up and monitoring
  • Explore emerging risks financial services firms should have on their radar
  • Make a difference: consider steps that you can take to enhance event and scenario practices
