Access to Cash

UK Finance and the largest retail banks and building societies made five commitments in May 2021, aimed at preserving access to cash for consumers and businesses over the long term. These commitments include:

  • ensuring that cash will be available for those who need it and when they need it, particularly small businesses, the elderly and vulnerable;
  • supporting the Community Access to Cash Pilots
  • working together to consider possible models for future access to cash which address changing access requirements and meet the needs of customers and communities;
  • protecting current critical cash infrastructure until a viable alternative to cash is available;
  • establishing and maintaining a framework to enable early identification of potential cash ‘cold spots’.

The Access to Cash Action Group has developed and agreed a new approach to protecting cash access in the long term. This work builds on insights from the Access to Cash Pilots, which supported eight communities across the UK to trial and test different ways to allow people access to cash.

The Access to Cash Pilots formally ended on 31 October 2021 with agreement that the two Bank Hubs, one in Cambuslang and one in Rochford, be extended until May 2023.
