UK Finance Response to MHCLG Consultation - Rogue Landlord Database Reform

In April 2018, the government introduced a database which allows local authorities to store and share information about rogue landlords and property agents. In October 2018 the  prime minister committed to allowing tenants to gain access to this database. The government is seeking views around how to appropriately broaden access and what degree of information should be accessible. We responded on behalf of our members active in buy-to-let mortgage lending. We expressed support for the proposal to widen access to the Rogue Landlord Database, and we called for the database to be accessible not only to tenants but to organisations with an interest in the private rented sector, including mortgage lenders, letting agents, etc. Allowing this would make it more challenging for unscrupulous landlords to operate and help drive them out of the sector.
