The report provides insights into how the use of cash is changing in the UK, as well as examining who is using cash and what they are using it for. It also looks at the various ways in which we access cash and provides detailed statistics about the cash machine market in the UK.

Cash payments continued to decline in 2024 in favour of card payments and in particular contactless debit card payments. Mobile wallet services linked to a debit or credit card, such as Apple Pay and Google Pay, have also entered the market, providing further payment choices for consumers at the checkout. In the person-to-person front, cash payments are being replaced by Faster Payments. Nevertheless, most adults are ATM users and use cash to pay for goods or services at least once month. For a small but persisting slice of the UK population, cash remains the main payment method in day-to-day spending.
