Insight builds on the success of the rollout of contactless on the Transport for London network, and growing customer demand outside of London to pay by contactless. Contactless use on the nation's transport network is an important step forward towards further innovations in payments and ticketing methods specifically on mobile, including smart ticketing, in the UK.

The Framework summarises three Contactless Transit  Models:

  • Model 1, Single Pay-As-You-Go: The contactless card or device is used at the start of the journey with a known fare; primarily for buses and trams
  • Model 2, Aggregated Pay-As-You-Go: The contactless card or device is used multiple times, and the fare is aggregated at the end of the day or journey leg; for multi-mode operators.
  • Model 3, Pre Purchase: A contactless card or device is associated with a pre-purchased ticket and then used to access the travel.

The Framework does not include technical specifications or infrastructure. It  is intended to help transit operators consider whether to implement one or more of the Models, and it is at the commercial decision of the transit operators themselves as to how they deploy their own contactless solutions going forward.
