The UK payments industry is increasingly diverse and continues to prioritise activities to lower barriers of access to interbank payments systems: the retail system operated by Pay.UK and the high value CHAPS system operated by the Bank of England. These systems perform a vital role in ensuring that funds move and are settled securely and efficiently.

To support consumers and businesses, a continual balance needs to be maintained between the benefits of open access and innovation with the need to ensure security, resilience and safety to all users of payments systems. Indeed, the number of firms with access to payments systems has increased in recent years with the aim to reduce barriers to entry, promote competition and economies of scale, and lower concentration risks. But access also requires firms to meet certain obligations in line with the use of a national critical network and infrastructure.

In this webinar we explore the landscape for access to payments systems, the importance of access and the role of the different parties involved in the access ecosystem. We will seek to understand the access journey, identify recent improvements, and unravel the challenges that remain. As the UK payments infrastructure is taken forward through the New Payments Architecture and the RTGS Renewal programme, we will also explore the approach to access in the emerging NPA and renewed RTGS including requirements to broaden access while maintaining security and resilience.
