Science and Industry Museum, Liverpool Road, Manchester M3 4FP United Kingdom
Financial services are an engine for growth and prosperity across the UK. Touching almost every aspect of the economy and society, the industry is playing a critical role in creating high paid, high skilled jobs across the UK, supporting businesses of all sizes to grow, developing people’s skills and driving regional investment.
The theme of this year’s dinner will focus on how the banking and finance sector supports regions to thrive by helping to drive and invest in skills.
During the dinner, you will hear from Capital One UK's CEO, Lucy Hagues, who has been invited to be part of the Government's "Maths to 18" initiative, that the Prime Minister and Education Secretary launched recently. Lucy will examine the maths and numeracy skills that are needed to succeed in the workplace and the ways in which maths is used to solve problems and answer questions across professions.
We will also reveal the latest developments from UK Finance on our Levelling Up, economic growth and skills work, and the opportunities this can create across the North.
Convening senior regional decision-makers, business leaders and members to engage, network and share valuable insights on the future of this agenda, this is an evening not to be missed.

Lucy is the CEO of Capital One UK and is responsible for the overall strategic direction and general management of the business. Lucy has also been invited to be part of the Government's "Maths to 18" initiative, that the Prime Minister and Education Secretary launched in 2023.
Lucy grew up as one of six children, in Oldham and her generation is the first of her family to go to university. She believes that lending creates opportunities and is focused on creation of products and experiences that make it easy for people to live successful financial lives.
Lucy joined Capital One in August 2000 from Girton College, Cambridge, where she studied engineering. She joined as part of the graduate programme and has worked in analytical and leadership roles across the UK business. Lucy gained experience in the broader industry during her time as a strategy consultant for Fair Isaac. She returned to Capital One in 2005 during a time of worsening credit performance in the industry as a whole and her subsequent experiences through varying conditions and regulatory changes make her a seasoned credit professional.
The deep expertise in all aspects of card lending that she has built up over time means that she is a Senior Credit Officer - a Credit Risk Management responsibility that reflects Capital One's trust in her expertise and ability to assess and make decisions on the technical fundamentals of the lending business.
Prior to her role as CEO, Lucy was Chief Marketing Officer. She recreated Capital One's marketing capability after the Great Recession - building strong relationships with tech players and putting together an in-house digital marketing team that outperforms dedicated agencies. She played a critical role in the development of several award-winning product initiatives, including the QuickCheck credit card eligibility checker.
Lucy sees herself as an important example and creator of opportunities for those coming next and is working to develop Capital One's already strong culture in this area. She is dedicated to creating opportunities for those who are under-represented in leadership positions in financial services. She speaks powerfully on Diversity, Inclusion and Belonging topics and takes every opportunity to speak to and inspire women and those from less-advantaged backgrounds who are early in their careers, appearing on panels and at events for charities operating in this space.
She is a long-time sponsor of the Early Careers Programme at Capital One UK - building experiences that help young people to succeed from the beginning. She's now extending that passion for development of talent by leading the activity in this space for our US Card business. Her mentoring and coaching of women in the middle of their careers is focused on helping them to realise their full potential.
Lucy lives in Nottingham with her husband, her son and daughter and two Labradors. In her spare time she loves to read, cycle and to go to the Opera.

Sarah set up The Listening Place in July 2016, having recognised the gap in services. She was a volunteer at Central London Samaritans for 37 years, during which time she spent 3 years as Director. She has been running The Listening Place as the unpaid CEO ever since! As a result she understands the need for confidentiality.
Sarah has worked in the private sector, public sector and now the third sector: having originally worked in HR in a large private sector company, Sarah has run a number of businesses and social enterprises in the past, as well as being a NED for many businesses in the commercial sector.
Previously, a Public Appointments Assessor, where she chaired the recruitment for Chairs of Public Bodies for many Government Departments; she was also a Commissioner for the Commission for Equality and Human Rights and ACAS and a non-executive director of JobCentre Plus. She was the author of The Anderson Review for Government. She used to chair the SME Council of the CBI, where she sat on the President’s Committee. Most recently she was lay advisor to the Independent Investigation into discrimination in the Conservative Party and a member of the State Honours Committee.
The only role outside The Listening Place that she now holds is as the Chair of Judges for the annual Everywoman awards for women running their own businesses.

The Listening Place was established in 2016 to provide those who feel life is no longer worth living with a safe place to talk freely and confidentially to warm, non-judgemental volunteers who are willing to engage with their feelings and support them through their darkest times.
Suicide kills around 18 a day in the UK. Most of those who die have sought but not found support and help. Suicide is the major single cause of death in men under the age of 49 in the UK, and there is an alarming increase in suicidal intentions amongst women. The Listening Place was established by a group of volunteers with a great deal of experience in supporting the suicidal. They had recognised that there is little on going face-to-face support available for many people with chronic suicidal feelings, and that some of this support can be given by well trained and professionally supervised volunteers.
Our Vision
Anyone who, for whatever reason feels life is no longer worth living, can find a place with a warm and open listener who will give them time.
Our Mission
To provide those who feel life is no longer worth living with a safe place to come and talk freely and confidentially to warm, non-judgemental volunteers who are willing to engage with their feelings and support them through their darkest times.
